Giving Tuesday 1st December

Coventry Haven Women’s Aid joins #GivingTuesday 2020, the global day of generosity taking place on 1st December.

Coventry Haven Women’s Aid is thrilled to announce that we’re one of the thousands of organisations taking part in this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign, to be held on the 1st of December.

Brought to the UK in 2014 by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), this year #GivingTuesday offers the opportunity to #GiveBack2020 either by donating to charity, reaffirming commitment to a cause, volunteering time or supporting others by simply helping a friend, neighbour or family member.

In 2020, the global Covid-19 pandemic has caused dramatic repercussions around the world. According to CAF research, charities have reported a significant increase in demand for their services while more than half (53%) have suffered a drop in donations. Charities estimate they will see a £10bn funding gap and without help many may be forced to close their doors.

Coventry Haven Women’s Aid began in 1972 as a women’s group and have grown to become a small, community-based, grass roots, registered charity which is run by women for women.

Our aim is to help women and their children who have been or are being subjected to, domestic abuse in any form to free themselves from the situation they are in.

We do this by providing safe housing and a range of support services, before during and after leaving their abusive partner/family member. We will assist you through your whole journey.

We support all women irrespective of whether they want to leave the relationship or not, older women, younger women, historic or current abuse; any woman.  We will assist you with any other issues you may be experiencing along side your abuse, for example surrounding: immigration, discrimination, disability, LGBT, housing, debt management, alcohol and drug abuse, multiple needs, or no recourse to public funds (NRPF).

These services are run by staff and volunteers and are free of charge.

In 2019 #GivingTuesday was the top trending item on UK Twitter and generated more than 487m impressions. In the UK, more than £14.2 million was raised in online donations (via Visa alone), equivalent to almost £10,000 per minute.

Jaime Richards, Development & Funding Officer, Coventry Haven Women’s Aid:

“2020 has been tougher than ever for the women and children we support; we really need your help to keep our safe spaces open and available for all victims to live a life free from violence and abuse.”

Gráinne Mathews, #GivingTuesday UK Lead at the CAF, adds:

“Charities have given us so much this year, from vital food deliveries during lockdown, to developing new ways to deliver services so they could continue to help those in need; all while struggling themselves with cancelled fundraising events and closed charity shops.

"This #GivingTuesday charities need us to be there for them, like they've been there for us. It is time to #GiveBack2020. It's easy, just think of what you have - money, a voice, family, friends, followers, or time - and how that might help."

Poem from a Survivor in Our Safe Refuge

This poem has been written by a survivor, who wanted to share her journey with everyone, and maybe it will help others to take that first step in leaving. Thank you for sharing:

“To all the Ladies who suffered these pains

We all made it to Haven, and we will never suffer again

We will build ourselves up, because enough is enough

We will hold hands together. We will try and be tough

Those awful memories I threw away, when I got on the train

I will tell everyone my story and never, ever feel ashamed

So no more wet eyes and rolling tears, because we all made it together, and now we’re here

Let’s close our eyes and join our hands and pray to God,  for those to understand

Please give us peace to our souls and help bandage up our broken hearts and bruises

Help us put behind our mental stress’s and pains

May we never, ever suffer these things all over again

Those are the girls stories            .

No one else but them could have told

New Year is arriving

Tomorrow we’ll becoming more bold”
