Day 10 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - 04.12.22

On #Day10 of the #16Days of Activism we are focusing on our #Volunteer Programme.

As we are a community based voluntary sector agency, it means that volunteers are essential to us. Volunteers can help by:

1. providing support to our Service Users

2. governing the agency as a trustee

3. linking us with the community.

We welcome applications to volunteer, from women over the age of 18, and are keen to recruit volunteers from different cultural backgrounds and with different language capabilities.

Training will be delivered to all new volunteers dependent on the role applied for and the courses vary in length; typically a volunteer looking to provide 1-1 support for a Service User, would be between 4-6 weeks, one day per week.

Opportunities exist in the following roles:

✅Support and helpline

✅Fundraising and events

✅Community Outreach / Champions

✅Admin

✅Trustee

If you would like to volunteer at #CoventryHaven, please call 02476444077 or email: info@coventryhaven.co.uk and ask for Tessa. We will then contact you to arrange a short and informal interview, and if successful, you will be invited to a training course.

If after training, you are considered suitable for the role, you will be offered a placement, with days and hours to suit you.

Day 9 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - 03.12.22

Here we are on #Day9 of the #16Days Campaign and we are introducing our #Training support for all.

Our training and awareness raising offer, for employers or professionals in social care, health, education, police, clergy, magistrates and the local community wishing to gain crucial knowledge or an insight into Domestic Violence/Abuse (DVA), HBA/FM and FGM/FGC (Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting).

DVA can affect all aspects of a persons life from education and employment, to health, social and child care; it is everyone's business.

Often employers do not realise that they have an increased #DutyOfCare if an employee discloses they are being abused. And many do not have a Domestic Abuse policy in place.

What's the impact on employers?

It causes depression, sleep deprivation, inability to concentrate, loss of appetite or physical pain. These factors could result in performance issues, absenteeism or presenteeism, and consequently reduced productivity/lost output. Research by KPMG shows that £316m in economic output is lost by UK businesses each year as a result of absences related to DVA.

*In addition, the potential loss of earnings per female victim is more than £5,800 per year.

*75% of employed victims are harassed by their abusers while at work, through repeated calls or visits to the workplace. This can impact on colleagues who find themselves taking messages from the perpetrator, shielding unwanted calls/visits, taking on or covering for their absence. In some cases, they may inadvertently put themselves at risk.

Our workshops will provide professional, robust guidance, to assist you with:

✅Awareness raising

✅Dispelling myths around DA

✅Gaining a new understanding

✅Developing new skills

✅Understanding dynamics

✅Recognising signs

✅Advice of how to provide help in a safe/sensitive way

✅How to develop effective referral pathways

✅Your own or your organisation's professional development

We also offer age appropriate training for children from Reception to Year 13.

Day 7 of 16 Days Activism Against Gender Based Violence - 1st Dec 2022

Here we are on #Day7 of the #16Days campaign and we are talking about our #ForcedMarriage and #HonourBasedAbuse service.

What do these terms mean?

A forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both of the parties is 'assisted' to get married without her/his consent or against her/his will.

Forced marriage is different from an #ArrangedMarriage in which both parties consent to the assistance of parents/family or a third party in identifying a spouse.

FM/HBA is a crime or incident which is often committed to protect or defend the so called 'honour' of family and/or community. We recognise FM/HBA as one of the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) issues, that we support women and girls with as an integral part of our service offer.

Crimes of so called 'honour' do not always include violence; crimes committed may include:

❌Domestic abuse

❌Threats of violence

❌Threats to disown you

❌Sexual abuse

❌Psychological/emotional abuse, for example "Your grandma wants to see you marry before she dies"; "I will kill myself if you bring shame to our family by not getting married"; "If you don't marry him then your sister will have to"

❌Forced Marriage

❌Being held against your will or taken somewhere where you do not want to go (often to another country)

❌Surveillance and harassment

Please call our #SafeToTalk #Helpline on 08001114998 or 02476444077 for specialist support.

Day 6 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - 30.11.22

*Trigger Warning* - sensitive details

Welcome to #Day6 of the #16Days Campaign, and today we are looking at our PCC commissioned specialist #FGM (or #FGC) service.

What is FGM/FGC?

The terms FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and FGC (Female Genital Cutting) refer to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons (World Health Organisation, 2008) and there are various types of FGM.

FGM is illegal in the UK and some other countries, and is a form of child abuse and in the same way as domestic abuse, FGM is regarded as an oppressive practice, an act of abuse against women, girls and children and a violation of their human rights.

Our specialist FGM Practitioners offer the following support:

✅Specialist practical and emotional support for women, children and girls whom are victims, or at risk of, genital mutilation and abuse

✅Safe refuge accommodation

✅Awareness raising of FGM within practicing communities

✅Training to professionals in statutory and voluntary services, including schools, doctors surgeries and hospitals and midwives

✅Recruitment of Community Champions to extend our reach to all communities

✅Promotion and publication of the ' Ending FGM' message

✅Working at a strategic level to ensure a good policy response

Call our #SafeToTalk #Helpline on 08001114998 and ask to speak to Nene or Natasha, for more info.

Day 5 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - 29.11.22

Here we are on Day 5 of the #16Days Campaign, and we are introducing our #IRIS #Project.

IRIS is a general practice-based #DomesticViolenceAndAbuse (DVA) training, support and referral programme.

IRIS ensures that primary care practitioners can respond effectively to DVA and that specialist support is available for patients. The Advocate Educator provides training, specialist support and advocacy services for patients affected by abuse.

As women are most likely to be affected by DVA, the service primarily supports women (aged 16 and above) who are experiencing DVA from a current partner, ex-partner or adult family member. IRIS also recognises that abuse can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation and the programme supports all patients affected by DVA including male survivors of DVA and survivors in LGBT relationships.

Call our #SafeToTalk #Helpline on 08001114998 for more information.

Day 4 of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - 28.11.22

On Day 4 of #16Days we are focusing on our Survivor/Thriver 'One Step Forward' #DomesticAbuse programme.

Our ‘One Step Forward’ group work webinar is a 6-week programme that last for 1 hour 30 mins each week.

Each Session is carried out over a webinar (Zoom). You will be able to see a presentation each week covering the different topics around domestic abuse and the impact it has on you and your children.

You are invited to share your thoughts and experiences, although you can choose to have your camera or microphone off if you would prefer to only listen to the facilitator and others in the group.

The webinar is always a confidential and safe space for everyone.

Following each session there will be a feedback sheet for you to complete if you wish to evidence your awareness around domestic abuse for Social Care, the Family Court or for your own records. All participants will receive a certificate of participation once they have completed the programme.

Please call 02476 444 077 or email info@coventryhaven.co.uk to register for your free place on the course; please note there may be a waiting list for the course, due to how popular and effective it has been.

We are proud to announce that our One Step Forward Programme was awarded the ‘Simon Morgan Award for Participation’ in the 2021 Coventry Health and Wellbeing Awards.
